Trompe l’Oeil/Grisaille
Illusions of layers of paint and glaze. Whether it’s grisaille or trompe l’oeil, these two treatments are subtle yet deceptive.
Celebrated by the Old Masters of Renaissance, grisaille involves the subtle use of grey monochromes to replicate carved stone or plaster. The effect is eye-catching without seeming heavy.
Trompe l’oeil is a timeless decorating approach that has flourished since the French Renaissance and can open up a room with its deceptiveness. Combine it with a mural to open up walls and expand your horizons with this sophisticated design element.
As artists of this trickery, we’re able to use either approach to add texture and depth to disguise or distinguish any surface.
From the ruins of Pompeii to modern urban fascination with whales and forests, releasing buildings from the constraints of their four corners and adding to their texture and character are both infinitely possible.
